Anyone who has looked after a website knows the feeling. You press “Update”, and the home page is white. Or the shop no longer opens, because a plugin did not get along with the new version. Then the search begins: which update was it, how do I go back, is there a backup? Many people end up never updating, and that is worse: old versions are the ones that get hacked.
Cleitext is built so that this never happens. Updating must be boring: one click, and the site keeps working. Here is what happens behind that click.
The new version is tried before it goes live
When you update Cleitext, the new version is downloaded and checked, then started on the side, while your site keeps answering with the current one. Only when the new version is ready and shows your home page does the switch happen. If it does not start, nothing changes: your visitors never notice, and the Updates page tells you why.
A backup every time, and the old version kept
Before touching anything, Cleitext saves the database, the media and the plugins. The previous version stays on the server, so going back takes one command, even months later. You never have to remember to make a copy: it is part of the update.
Plugins and themes that do not fit go back by themselves
Plugins and themes from the catalog say which versions of Cleitext they work with, and Cleitext checks it before installing: if one needs a newer Cleitext, you are told to update first, instead of finding out with a broken page. And if an updated plugin or theme does not start anyway, the previous version is put back at once.
One plugin with a problem never takes the site down
Each plugin runs in its own space, with a time limit. If one has an error, that plugin stops and the admin tells you which one; the rest of the site, pages, shop and forms included, keeps working. No white page, no hunting through files to switch it off.
- The new version is tried before the switch
- A backup before every update
- Compatibility checked before installing
- Automatic way back for plugins and themes
- A plugin with an error stops alone, the site goes on
So you can update without fear
All this has one goal: that you update. New versions bring security fixes and new features, and they are worth having the day they come out. You can even let Cleitext update itself, its plugins and its themes automatically, and get an email with what changed.
