Colours, fonts, header, menus and widgets you choose in Customize have always been safe: they are saved in your site, not in the theme. But a theme’s own files are replaced when it updates, so a change written inside them would be lost. From version 0.79, there is a proper place for those changes too.
Additional CSS, for every theme
In Appearance → Customize every theme now has an Additional CSS section: write your rules and see them on the page as you type. You can keep rules for every theme, or for the active theme only. They are saved in your site, so they stay when the theme updates and even when you change theme.
Child themes, as in WordPress
For bigger changes, such as a different page layout or a new template, there are child themes. A child theme takes everything from its parent and changes only what it contains. The parent keeps updating, and your child theme stays as you made it.
- One click in Appearance → Themes: Create child theme, with your Customize choices copied over
- Download it as a zip, change it on your computer and upload it again
- Every Cleitext theme works as a parent: Canvas, Pulsar, Zenit, Aurora and Vitality
- A parent cannot be deleted while a child uses it, and a paid parent keeps its license
Developers will find everything in the themes guide: how to override or wrap a template, the order of the styles and a complete example.
Updates that never break your site
This is one more step in a promise we keep at every release: updates never break your site, and every change is tested before it reaches you.
