Matomo or Google Analytics? With the Analytics plugin of Cleitext you can use one, the other or both: turn them on, paste the ID, and the privacy rules of each service are applied for you.

Matomo without cookies
In anonymous mode Matomo uses no cookies and keeps only aggregate statistics: the Garante allows it without consent, as long as you mask the IP address in Matomo. No banner needed for it.
Google Analytics, after consent
Google Analytics 4, Tag Manager and the Meta Pixel need consent. The plugin loads them only after the visitor accepts their category in the banner, turns on Google Consent Mode v2, adds their cookies to the cookie table and describes them in the privacy policy, transfers outside the EU included.
Search engines too
- Google Search Console and Bing verification codes
- Several services at once
- Visitors asked again when the services change
Which one to choose
If you want to know how many people visit and which pages they read, Matomo without cookies is often enough, and your visitors see no banner at all. If you run ads or need the reports of Google, use Google Analytics and accept that part of the visitors will say no: the numbers will be lower, but honest. Many sites use both: Matomo for the complete picture, Google for the campaigns.
Whatever you choose, the codes are pasted once in the settings of the plugin, not in the theme. Change theme and the statistics keep working; turn a service off and its script, its cookies and its paragraph in the policy disappear together.
The plugin also reminds you of the details that are easy to forget: with Matomo, mask two bytes of the IP address in its settings; with Google, check the data retention period in the account. Small steps, done once, that make the statistics of your site honest and lawful.
The banner itself comes from the Privacy & GDPR plugin.
