A multilingual website without complications

Languages, linked translations, an address per language and hreflang: how the Multilingual plugin works, with machine translation if you want it.

This very site is a multilingual website: English and Italian, with a switcher at the top. In Cleitext it takes one plugin, Multilingual, from the catalog.

A multilingual website with linked translations

How the multilingual website works

  • Add languages in Languages: each has its address prefix, such as /it
  • Add translation copies a page into a draft in the other language
  • The lists show which translations are missing or need an update
  • Menus, categories and the site title per language

Good for search engines

Every page tells search engines about its other versions with hreflang, in the page and in the XML sitemap, as Google recommends. Each language has its own home, posts page and feed.

Translate faster

Visitors land in the right language

The switcher always leads to the same page in the other language, not to the home. Content you write without translating, such as a local news item, stays in its language only. And when you change a page, its translations are marked as “to update”, so nothing stays behind for long.

You can start with one language and add the second one later: existing pages stay where they are, and you translate them one at a time. Each language can also have its own menu, so the Italian visitors see Italian labels and the English ones see English labels, with no extra work.

Search results also get better: each version of a page competes in its own language, people who search in Italian find the Italian page, and duplicate content is not a problem because search engines know that the pages are translations of each other. The plugin is free, from the catalog, and it is not part of the base package: a site in one language stays lighter.

Save a DeepL key and new translations can be translated automatically, keeping bold, links and blocks. Or ask your AI assistant: “Translate the Contact page into Italian.”
